Celebrating Chris Turning 28 At The Grill By Sean Connolly

Birthdays are my absolute favourite – whether it’s my own or someone else’s, I’m always a fan of celebrating milestones! Chris is celebrating turning 28 this year so I wanted to treat him to a special dinner for his birthday. I’m a foodie – I love trying new foods and exploring new flavours however Chris is a farm boy from the South and loves a classic kiwi meal.

I knew the The Grill by Sean Connolly down Federal Street, part of SkyCity would be the best place to treat him to. The Grill by Sean Connolly is a perfect mix of both our worlds. It’s not too intimidating for him with the relaxed atmosphere and familiar foods. What I love about The Grill by Sean Connolly it’s simple, authentic and beautifully done food. It’s distinctly Kiwi with most of the ingredients they use are sourced locally from specially selected New Zealand suppliers including their wines.

It was a warm night so we sat in the outdoor section which felt very homely with greenery and outdoor lights. We ordered oysters and beers to start. Oysters are a favourite of mine and a food Chris had never tried before so I was so excited that he was open to trying them. We had the pacfic oysters, Te Kouma served with a simple vinaigrette and lemon slices. They were absolutely devine and creamy. As for me trying new things, beer is a favourite of Chris’ and something I’d never tried before – crazy, right?! He chose the Epic Armageddon IPA for the both of us to try. I couldn’t think of a better first time to try beer than in celebration of Chris.

When it came to food, we kept it simple, Chris loves steak and we were spoilt for choice with The Grill by Sean Connolly’s extensive Steak Library. Chris went with the Awhi Farms Pasture-Fed Sirloin and a side of Duck Fat Chips. He was incisive on the sauces so chose both Green Peppercorn sauce and Miso Hollandaise as well as the Garlic & Parsley Compound Butter.

It was such a beautiful evening spent together with such delicious food. Chris was a huge fan so we’ll definitely be back soon to enjoy more of their meals.
